TO SERVE

What does it mean to serve? Some people believe it means to be the poorest or to have the lowest job. Jesus said, the last shall be first and the first shall be last. I had a boss years ago that always took all the garbage out and I remember others trying to take it out for him and he would never let anyone else take it out. One day, I asked him why he always took the garbage out and why he never let anyone else do it and he told me that he did it to keep himself humble. I thought this was so interesting . Later in my life, I learned that to be the best leader, you must serve others.

What is it that all great leaders have in common?

  • SEE the future

  • ENGAGE and DEVELOP others

  • REINVENT Continuously

  • VALUE Results and Relationships

  • EMBODY the Values

From: “The Secret: What Great Leaders Know” by: Ken Blanchard & Mark Miller

Always be on the lookout for people that possess the same values, talents and passions that are most important to you. You want like-minded people, who will have a passion for what you do. “People will not give you their hand, until they can see your heart.” by: John Maxwell You must get to know your followers and make sure they know, how much you appreciate them. “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” From the book: “The Secret: What Great Leaders Know” by: Ken Blanchard & Mark Miller “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve” by: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  1. I have always thought that my father was the closest thing on this earth to Jesus. At his funeral so many people said he was the “finest man they ever met.” He cleaned, repaired and installed furnaces, getting up in the middle of many a cold night to help out a widow who had no heat. Why did this man have the respect of all he met? Riches, power, fame? No. He had a servant’s heart.

    • Yes, I agree! My father’in-law is a Pastor and he gets those calls, as well! I also grew up in a home, where serving others was done on a daily basis. We’re so blessed to have such wonderful role models around!

  2. Christ Jesus was God incarnate while He walked the earth. Yet He would set many examples of humility such as washing the feet of His disciples. This is on the order of the kind of spirit which the boss was setting by taking out the trash.

He did it to keep himself humble, while Christ was setting the example of humility for His disciples to follow and teach to others. A very good post!
