WHAT HAPPENS WHEN…

What happens when a nation forgets God? To sum it up in just a few words, judgement from God. When we look back at history, we find many times that people have turned away from God, including history from the Bible. When we put our selfish desires before God’s, bad things are bound to happen. Forgetting God doesn’t just happen overnight, it takes time and we usually are deceived, one sin at a time. We tend to begin justifying ourselves or what we’re doing or we say things like, that’s not so bad or it was just a “white lie”, etc. We need to be vigilant in our relationship with our creator, so that we won’t be deceived. We can also choose to ignore history, but when we do this, history tends to repeat itself. When we don’t ignore history and instead we learn from it, we usually don’t repeat it.

At the beginning of Hitler’s popularity, the people of Germany were frustrated with the economic situation that was going on at this time. When people get desperate, they do things that they wouldn’t normally do. The German people were without jobs, which means they were without food, some had no place to live and there was no hope of it getting any better. Then, Hitler begins to show the people that he will take care of Germany, if they would just follow him. At this time, I’m sure that this felt like the only solution to their problems. As soon as his popularity was increasing, he began implementation of  the propaganda against the Jews. Hitler basically blamed all of Germany’s economic woes and anything else that was wrong with the country, on the Jews. Antisemitism was already a part of the country, so it was pretty easy to encourage it more and make it more popular. There is an excellent book that I highly recommend: “When A Nation Forgets God: 7 Lessons We Must Learn From Nazi Germany” by Erwin W. Lutzer This book breaks it down, so we don’t repeat history.

It’s easy to judge history from our perspective, but just think about what you might have done, if you lived in Germany at this time, especially  considering that these changes took place over years and it didn’t happen overnight. Think about our present day and how much we’ve changed over the years, some for the better and some not. What would you do when given a choice to just go along or stand up against something for what you believe, even if it’s dangerous? I think that the more we learn from history, the better we’ll become!

Measure of a Life

“The measure of a life, after all, is not it’s duration, but it’s donation.” by Corrie Ten Boom

What is your donation to this world? I know that with Corrie Ten Boom, her story has been heard many times throughout the world and it’s quite exceptional and inspirational. As a christian woman, she was confronted with many difficult choices and she passed the tests with flying colors. She made the choice to help and hide the Jews during the Holocaust, in her home and family business. She knew that by doing this, she was putting herself and her family in immediate danger, but her courage and faith in God moved her to action. If you’ve never read her book or seen the movie, I highly suggest it, it’s very inspiring. The name of the book is: “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom and copyright is 1992, it’s a classic book so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it at your local library. The movie is also “The Hiding Place” by World Wide Pictures Home Video, 1975. You can also see her home and learn more on: tenboom.org. She did survive the holocaust and the camps and later in her life, she shared her story many, many times over, until the day she died. She is a perfect example of a person who can be measured by her life, in the way she lived it and what she gave to the world.
